RN Charge/Patient Flow - Acute Care

FTE: .1 (PRN, as needed)

Shift: 7a-7p

Patient Flow:

  • Assign new admissions to the appropriate unit (2N, 3N, CCU, or 2 West).

  • Maintain awareness of discharges.

  • Facilitate internal transfers.

  • Strive to maintain census target goals and complete care teams.

  • Review telemetry order / level of care daily.

  • Enter NASH data entry at 0900, 1300, and 1700 daily.

  • Enter One Staff census data entry at 1400 daily.

  • Respond to Medical Emergency Team (MET) call and codes.

  • Complete Preadmission Screening and Resident Review (PASRR) on nursing home patients in absence of social worker.

  • Participate in “Bed Availability” exercises with the Iowa Department of Public Health Health Alert Network (HAN) and National Hospital Available Beds for Emergencies (HAvBed).


  • Make patient assignments based on assessed patient needs, (i.e. patient acuity and the abilities/competencies of the staff).

  • Assign Resource Team staff at 1500 and 1900.

  • Reviews staffing for next shift/next day/current week. Make adjustments when needed.

  • Coordinates shift activities.

  • Maintain awareness of overtime (monitor in One Staff).

  • Assist with staffing needs/requests for other nursing departments, (e.g. CCU, Peds, and OB).

  • Supervisor nursing care in accordance with nursing standards.

  • Act as a resource to staff / expert clinician.

Unit Activities:

  • Conduct daily huddles.

  • Perform Crash Cart daily check.

  • Perform Crash Cart monthly cleaning.

Patient Satisfaction:

  • Perform daily rounding on defined patient population.

  • Interpreter liaison/expertise (1600 – 1900 weekdays, weekends and holidays).

  • Answer for Guest Service Line phone calls 0700 – 1900.


  • Demonstrate ability to respond positively to changing circumstances, to provide leadership guidance, as well as conflict resolution and work with various staff members.

  • Demonstrate positive patient, family, and medical staff provider customer relation skills.

  • Assist with problem solving utilizing A3.

  • Facilitate team work.

  • Assist with follow up on patient/family complaint.

  • Review work multi-parameter report as delegated.

  • Assist with report to Department of Human Services for suspected abuse if social worker is unavailable.

  • Notify law enforcement if/when appropriate paper work is completed.

  • Assist with external transfers, calling receiving facility/air ambulance, and getting forms signed.

  • Make referral for Durable Medical Equipment (DME) Home Health Care (HHC) on weekends).

  • Assist with finding a primary care provider (PCP) for patients without one.

  • Must have skills and adaptability to crosstrain to other roles as appropriate i.e., Med RN, or Care Coordinator to provide safe effective care to paitent.


  • Bachelors of Science in Nursing preferred. Associate Degree or Diploma in Nursing required.


  • Current RN Licensure in State of Iowa or applicable compact state.

  • Must be licensed in state of residence.


  • 2 year staff nurse experience required, supervisory experience preferred.


  • Excels in effective and positive communications.

  • Promotes cooperative and team efforts.

  • Has a working knowledge of staffing levels and competencies.

  • Ability to delegate wisely, makes decisions with confidence.

  • Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification required.
