    Basic Function: Developing plans for student care based on assessment, interventions, identification of outcomes, and the evaluation of care. Monitoring immunizations, managing communicable diseases, and assessing the school environment to prevent injury and ensure safety. Completing state-required record audits.

    Provide management of a comprehensive school health program by assessing, planning/coordinating, implementing, and evaluating school health services to achieve the following goals: maximize in-class time by reducing health-related absenteeism, eliminate or minimize health problems that impair learning, and achieve the highest possible degree of independent student functioning.

    The school nurse will serve as program manager/coordinator, case manager/care provider, collaborator, advocate, educator, and counselor for the health concerns of the school.

    Essential Functions : Program Manager: In this role, the school nurse addresses the healthcare needs of school-wide health service issues that affect the entire school population.

    ? Works collaboratively with health care providers, student’s parents, school district staff, and community agencies to ensure access and continuity of care for students.

    ? Maintain up-to-date cumulative health records and mandatory immunization certificates for all students.

? Assume authority, in the absence of a physician, for the care of a student or staff member who has suffered injury or emergency illness.

? Advise on the exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infections and contagious diseases.

? Assist with the kindergarten round-up program on health issues and immunization requirements.

? Assume primary responsibility for maintaining an appropriate inventory of medical aid supplies in the school.

? Serve as a resource on wellness for the faculty, offering professional recommendations as appropriate and attend all meetings of the District Wellness Committee.

? Oversee the district Medicaid Program

? Assist with CPR training for students and staff.

Case Manager/Care Provider: In this role, the school nurse addresses the healthcare needs of individual students or small groups of students.

? Advise on the modification of the educational program to meet the health needs of individual students.

? Advise teachers on health matters, particularly regarding screening for student health problems.

? Assist school personnel in monitoring the school environment for student safety.

? Attend committee meetings and conferences regarding health services and health curriculum.

? Administer prescription and over-the-counter medication to students when the medications are to be taken during school hours.

? Assist in a program for the care of children with complex medical needs.

Educator:

? Conduct in-service training programs as needed including, but not limited to seizure, asthma, and epi-pen training.

? Serve as a member of the school’s Medical Emergency Response Team and assist the principal with all matters relating to the same.

? Counsel students in good health habits.

Collaborator/Advocate:

? Act as liaison with helping agencies such as the Department of Human Services, etc. when assigned to do so.

? Cooperate with school personnel in identifying and meeting the social, emotional, and physical needs of school children.

? Work with community agencies in planning facilities to meet the needs of children outside school situations

? Provides support and collaboration to the CMA at East Elementary and LPN at BallardEast.

General Functions:

Specifications/Qualifications:

? Qualified to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Iowa and holds an unrestricted license

? Preferred Bachelor of Science in Nursing

? Certified in CPR and First Aid.
