Summary The Details Clerk (OA) works as part of the Benefits and Enrollment Section of the Business Office within the Iowa City VA Healthcare System. The employee works primarily with processing deaths and performs a variety of administrative duties to complete death packet information, burial arrangements and interment of eligible VA Beneficiaries. The employee performs duties associated with patient program support, program administration, customers service, and other related duties as assigned. Responsibilities Major Duties listed but not limited to: Interviews, advises, and assists deceased patient's spouses, next of kin, or designee, regarding burial arrangements, including rights and entitlement to burial benefits and allowances Releases the veteran's remains, personal belongings, flag, and appropriate paperwork to the funeral home Arranges for a contract burial service, will view body after funeral home prepares for burial Maintains a registry of funeral directors willing to do burial services for amount of burial allowance within the ICVAHCS jurisdiction Determines entitlement to benefits and eligibility for interment in a National cemetery if so desired Completes necessary transportation arrangements of a body, when required, via rail or hearse including transportation of the remains to the closes port of embarkation for shipment outside continental limits of the U.S. Arranges for gravesite at a national cemetery with cemetery superintendent Responsible for administrative details relative to release of beneficiary's clothing, valuables, and funds in accordance with pertinent legal provisions as outlined in VA regulations 4800 through 4822 Cross-trains with beneficiary travel area to be able to assist when needed to include the processing of travel claims into Veterans Integrated Systems Technical Architecture (VistA) Performs other duties as assigned Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:30am - 4:00pm Compressed/Flexible: Not available Telework: Not available Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Qualifications To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 06/24/2024. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: This position requires a Typing Proficiency of 40 words per minute (WPM) GS-05 Specialized Experience: In addition to being able to type 40WPM, You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade G-04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized Experience with completing death packet sets and forms including Reports of Contact, death certificates, applications for burial benefits; Ability to utilize existing computer systems and software programs; Experience with entering data into multiple databases. OR, Education: Applicants may qualify based off education. You must have successfully completed 4 years of education above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite is creditable at grades GS-3 through GS-5 for all positions except Reporting Stenographer, GS-5. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. (TRANSCIPTS REQUIRED). OR, Combination: Applicants may qualify with a combination of experience and education. To be creditable you must have equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements at grades GS-5. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience. (TRANSCIPTS REQUIRED). The following are examples of how education and experience may be combined. They are examples only, and are not all inclusive: The position to be filled is a Clerk-Stenographer, GS-5. An applicant has 1 year of qualifying experience and 90 semester hours of college. The applicant meets 50 percent of the required experience and 75 percent of the required education. The applicant exceeds 100 percent of the total requirements and is qualified for the position. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
