This three-year fellowship will combine a mentored postdoctoral research position in the laboratory of one of the INI's over 100 INI faculty mentors, with a teaching position supporting the University of Iowa's new undergraduate major in Neuroscience, a joint program of the Department of Biology and the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences. This dual training fellowship will provide the successful candidate with an outstanding skill set for a career as an independent scientist/educator at a wide variety of academic institutions.The INI was established in January 2017, supported by a transformational $45 million grant to the University of Iowa from The Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust. Led by Director Ted Abel, Ph.D., the INI is a comprehensive and cross-disciplinary neuroscience center spanning 5 colleges and 26 departments, dedicated to finding the causes of - and preventions, treatments, and cures for - the many diseases that affect the brain and nervous system. A key part of the INI's mission is to promote neuroscience education and engagement, across the University of Iowa campus and beyond.Research: Fellows will be assisted in finding a match with an INI faculty mentor, in whose laboratory they will conduct mentored research (approximately 50% time in years 1 and 2; 75% time in year 3). Fellows will gain facility with cutting-edge technologies and experimental approaches to the study of the nervous system and both its normal functioning and dysfunction in neurological and psychiatric disorders. Faculty mentors, their lab personnel, and fellow INI scientists will provide a rich training environment, helping fellows to acquire skill in study design, statistical analysis, translational and clinical teamwork, grant writing, and manuscript preparation. INI faculty work on a broad range of neuroscience questions, including but not limited to: neuromodulation; formation and function of neural circuits; neurogenetics; and the etiology and cellular and molecular mechanisms of disorders such as autism, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, Parkinson's disease, and depression. Core facilities of the INI and the Carver College of Medicine provide cutting-edge instrumentation and support for mouse behavioral studies (the Neural Circuits and Behavior Core), fMRI (the Iowa Magnetic Resonance Facility with 3T and 7T scanners), transcranial magnetic stimulation, proteomics, genomics (the Iowa Institute of Human Genetics), microscopy (the Central Microscopy Research Facility), and optogenetics. Funds will be available to support fellows' travel to present their INI research at the Annual Meeting of the Society for Neuroscience.Teaching: Fellows will have the opportunity to design and teach new neuroscience courses, as well as contribute to existing courses, in support of the University of Iowa's undergraduate major in Neuroscience (approximately 50% teaching time in years 1 and 2; 25% in year 3). The fellow will receive training in classroom pedagogy and course design from experienced faculty mentors in the Department of Biology and the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, and through programs and courses offered by the University of Iowa's Center for Teaching.
