Job Summary: A Substitute Teacher is responsible for delivering instruction, managing the classroom environment, and promoting student learning in the absence of the regular teacher. This role requires flexibility, adaptability, and the ability to quickly establish rapport with students.

Key Responsibilities:

Qualifications:

  • Certification: A valid Iowa Teaching License, Substitute License or Substitute Authorization.

  • Experience: Prior teaching or substitute teaching experience is preferred.

  • Skills: Strong classroom management skills, effective communication, adaptability, and the ability to engage students in learning.

Instructional Duties:

  • Implement lesson plans provided by the absent teacher or create effective lesson plans if none are available.

  • Deliver instruction in a manner that is engaging and appropriate to the grade level and subject area.

  • Adapt teaching methods to meet the varying needs and learning styles of students.

  • Assess student progress and provide feedback when necessary.

Classroom Management:

  • Maintain a safe and orderly classroom environment conducive to learning.

  • Enforce school policies and rules to manage student behavior effectively.

  • Address any disciplinary issues promptly and in accordance with school procedures.

Student Supervision:

  • Supervise students in the classroom, hallways, cafeteria, and other school areas as needed.

  • Ensure student safety at all times and report any incidents or concerns to school administration.

Communication:

  • Communicate clearly and effectively with students, staff, and administration.

  • Provide feedback to the regular teacher on student performance, behavior, and any issues that arose during their absence.

  • Collaborate with other teachers and staff to support student learning and school initiatives.

Professional Conduct:

  • Follow all school policies, procedures, and regulations.

  • Demonstrate professionalism in appearance, demeanor, and interactions.

  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student information and school matters.

Additional Duties:

  • Attend meetings and training sessions as required by the district.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the school administration.

This is a non-contract position. Substitute positions work on call as needed for various assignments/buildings throughout the district. Substitutes in good standing at the end of a school year may elect to return to their subbing position for the following school year.

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated periodically by the Human Resources Department.
