Johnston Community School District Assistant Varsity (9th) Cheerleading Coach (Fall & Winter) in Johnston, Iowa

Job Summary: To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. At the same time, the coach must instruct and demonstrate behaviors that lead to socially acceptable character development, self-discipline, self-confidence, and pride of accomplishment in the student athletes. To upgrade his/her knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, consultation, etc.

Qualifications:

  • ICCA Safety Certification

  • Iowa Coaching Authorization preferred

  • Ability to organize and maintain a cheer program.

  • Thorough knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and ability to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field.

  • Keep updated on current cheer and ICCA rules & regulations, research and attend appropriate clinics/conferences.

  • Ability to effectively and properly motivate students and athletes to achieve maximum potential in all areas of performance

  • Serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes

  • Perform other duties and special projects as it pertains to the recruitment and sustaining an 8-12 cheer program.

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of all the athletic policies approved by the Johnston Community Schools' Board of Education and responsible for implementation by the entire staff of the program.

  • Thorough knowledge of existing system, state and league regulations and responsible for consistent implementation and interpretation for staff.

  • Understands the proper administrative line of command and refers all requests or grievances through proper channels. Is aware of all public/staff/departmental meetings that require attendance.

  • Communication with Community Education for program development, implementation, scheduling and facility usage.

  • Directs all facets of the cheer program, staff and facility operations that pertain to cheerleading.

  • Creates a vision and expectations for the cheer program for grades 8-12. Establishes the fundamental philosophy, skills and techniques to be taught by staff.

  • Assists in the hiring of highly qualified assistant coaches

  • Develops cheer staff by providing opportunities to lead, collaborating with staff to implement best practices and by evaluating performance of assistant coaches.

  • Delegates specific duties, supervises implementation and, at season's end, analyzes staff effectiveness and evaluates all assistants.

  • Maintains discipline, addresses grievances and works to increase morale and cooperation.

  • Completes paperwork on all disabling athletic injuries on proper forms and submits to the athletic office within 24 hours.

  • Stays in regular contact with the MS/HS Activities Director and keeps both updated and informed on a regular basis.

  • Attends all Activities Department meetings.

  • Performs such other duties which may be assigned by the athletic director/principal.

Finance and Equipment:

  • Participates in the budgeting function with the athletic director by establishing requirements for the next season. Recommends equipment guidelines as to type, style, color or technical specifications. Is responsible for operating within budget appropriations.

  • Accountable for all equipment and collects the cost of any equipment lost or not returned. Arranges for issuing, storing and reconditioning of equipment and submits annual inventory and current records concerning the same.

  • Properly marks and identifies all equipment before issuing or storing.

  • Monitors equipment rooms and coaches' offices, authorizes who may enter, issue or requisition equipment. Oversees the selection, installation, and maintenance of performance equipment including cleaning and repair.

  • Permits the athletes to only be in authorized areas of the building at the appropriate times.

  • Examines practice and weight rooms before and after practices and scheduled sessions, checking on general cleanliness of facilities. Responsible for cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment.

  • Secures all doors, lights, windows and locks before leaving the building if custodians are not on duty.

  • Instills in each participant a respect for equipment and school property, its care and proper use.

Public Relations:

  • Fosters relationships with all coaches and athletes to support all athletic programs within the Activities Department.

  • Promotes the program within the school through recruiting students that are not involved in athletics.

  • Responsible for the quality, effectiveness and validity of any oral or written release to local media.

  • Responsible for maintaining good public relations with news media, booster club, parents, officials, volunteers and fans.

  • Attends and contributes to the four seasonal (fall, winter, spring, summer) parent meetings organized by the MS/HS Activities Directors.
