Johnston Community School District Elementary Reading Teacher 2025-26 in Johnston, Iowa

Qualifications, Certification, and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in education

  • Valid Iowa teaching license with K-8 Reading endorsement

  • Previous successful teaching experience preferred

  • Comprehensive understanding of the reading process

  • Comprehensive understanding of Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS)

  • Ability to diagnose individual reading problems and prescribe solutions

  • Ability to work collaboratively with classroom teachers in non-supervisory coaching environment

Professional Performance Responsibilities

  • Work with teachers during PLCs to analyze ongoing, formative assessment as well as screening data to make instructional decisions that impact universal, targeted, and intensive instruction.

  • Model for classroom teachers the components of balanced literacy, guided reading, and targeted interventions.

  • Collaborate with teachers to create meaningful distributed practice experiences for students.

  • Coordinate instruction with classroom teachers to provide an aligned, more highly successful, instructional package to students.

  • Collaborate with teachers to provide communication with families in the area of literacy instruction.

  • Provide high quality, targeted, explicit interventions (based on data) to small groups of students who are at risk for reading failure.

  • Provide intensive instruction to students who are not responding to targeted instruction.

  • Analyze progress monitoring data to ensure that instruction is effective/making an impact on student learning; adjust instruction if necessary.

  • Collaborate with building leadership to analyze school literacy data to determine effectiveness of literacy instruction throughout the building.

  • Provide support to families in reading programs

Terms of Employment: 194-day contract
