Molecular Sciences in Seeds Regulatory Sciences team is currently seeking a (Sr.) Research Scientist/Molecular Subject Matter Expert (SME) in Molecular and Functional Genomics to support product development in biotech through regulatory safety studies. This role will focus on planning, monitoring experiments, analyzing large genomic datasets from NGS projects, preparing study reports and registration submission documents. Additionally, the position will involve presenting/delivering results and conclusions, and answering agencies' question related to fundamental biological questions in molecular, genetics, and functional areas, including both genetically modified (GM) and gene-edited (GE) crops using diverse approaches. The successful candidate will ensure studies are in compliance with all safety, regulatory, and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) in support of safety assessments conducted for regulatory submissions for our GM/GE crop products. The candidate will be expected to work with diverse talent from multiple functions. The position will be in Global Business Center in Johnston, IA.

Role Purpose

The primary purpose is to support molecular characterization and bioinformatic analysis in Seeds Regulatory Sciences, applying genetics, genomic, bioinformatics approaches to analyze data and interpret results. The position will involve adjusting procedures and methods to achieve study objectives for regulatory purpose. The candidate will apply subject matter expertise to solve biological problems/questions raised internally or externally. The position will connect researchers in Biotech to understand products both GM and GE crops in the pipeline, provide suggestions from a regulatory perspective, form study plans for the products in the regulatory, and drive product registration in a rapidly evolving scientific discipline and challenging regulatory landscape.

What You'll Do:

  • Plan regulatory studies in the molecular and bioinformatics area, monitor and deliver the studies on targeted timelines to meet project and business needs.

  • Coordinate and perform experiments to characterize GM/GE crops using molecular, genetics, genomic, and bioinformatics approaches.

  • Provide functional genomic, computational skills, and subject matter expertise to a range of products in regulatory for risk assessment.

  • Process, analyze, and interpret large-scale datasets including WGS, SbS, amplicon NGS from multiple projects through established or customized pipelines, write and review complex technical documents (protocols, reports, and SOPs) to meet regulatory agency's requirements.

  • Manage collaborations within global regulatory teams, lead projects, and represent as a subject matter expert (SME) in cross-functional teams, providing technical expertise in the development of technology, regulatory, and safety strategies.

  • Collaborate with global/regional/country teams to identify, solve, and manage key scientific problems, particularly on the design, use, and interpretation of safety data.

  • Provide input or scientific responses to questions from regulatory authorities, considering regulatory and technical implications both locally and globally.

  • Play an active role in identifying, solving, and managing a variety of technical issues or challenges.

  • Collaborate with researchers in Biotech on lead discovery in key crops.

  • Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) on a daily basis to maintain accurate experimental records

Qualifications

What Skills You Need:

  • Ph.D. degree in plant genetics, plant molecular biology, functional genomics, bioinformatics, computational biology or related fields, with a minimum of 8 years of relevant professional experience in the agricultural biotech industry; post-doctoral experience preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience in NGS and workflow, proficient in using analysis software and techniques for data analysis and visualization.

  • Experience in experimental design of GM/GE trait characterization using molecular, genetic, genomic techniques, and bioinformatics approaches with a proven record of success in the form of publications and/or patents.

  • Excellent analytical skills in interpreting and presenting study results with enthusiasm for problem-solving.

  • Broad knowledge of gene editing technology, agricultural biotechnology, plant molecular biology, and bioinformatics.

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work with a matrixed team environment.

Additional Knowledge, Experience, and Skills:

  • Technical knowledge, expertise, and experience to traits of interest for major crops on genetics and breeding and biotech.

  • Knowledge to understand latest technologies used in GM/GE crops, gene function, molecular mechanisms.

  • Experience working with a high-performance computing, coding in Python and R.

  • Knowledge of GM traits/products requirements for cultivation and import approval preferred.
