Johnston Community School District Secondary Behavior Technician (3 positions) in Johnston, Iowa

This is a district-wide position with a home-based building assignment and flexibility to support other buildings as needed. Assigned to one of three secondary schools.

JOB SUMMARY: Under the direction of a licensed teacher and/or administrator, the Special Education Behavior Technician provides direct support within special education behavior programs or within Johnston Therapeutic classrooms, as well as individual and small group support to special education students. This position also collaborates with teachers on implementation fidelity of behavior intervention plans and individualized education plan support in the classroom.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Minimum of two years’ experience implementing behavior plans for PK-12 students

  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification or willingness to obtain within 60 days

  • Paraeducator certification preferred

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborates with teachers and administrators to develop classroom behavior management plans and social, emotional, behavioral, and mental health supports in the classroom

  • Serves as a first responder to behavior problems and assists with de-escalating student behaviors and reintegration into the classroom

  • Provides support to classroom associates with implementing behavior intervention and individualized education plans, addressing questions, and problem-solving behaviors as well as supporting their social, emotional, behavioral, and mental health

  • Assists with implementation of multi-tiered system of supports in behavior

  • Serves as a resource to general education teachers to ensure implementation of students’ plans

  • Assists with social skills planning and instruction

  • Assists in creating student materials related to behavior intervention plans

  • Participates in meetings related to students’ behavior plans

  • Documents behavioral issues and supports data collection process

  • Assists with data collection and maintains accurate records and reports

  • Assists students with daily routines

  • Assists students with personal care, including but not limited to the following:

  • Toileting - lifting, transferring, garment removal, changing diapers, use of adaptive toileting equipment, clean-up procedures

  • Feeding - blending foods, serving students, feeding through gastrostomy tubes

  • Lifting - use of proper lifting techniques to transfer students in/out of wheelchairs using two or three person lifts or lift equipment (training provided by district)

  • Distribution of medication - once trained by nurse/medical personnel

  • General hygiene - assist in removing excreted bodily fluids using appropriate safety precautions

  • Maintains working knowledge and use of available technology

  • Demonstrates punctual and regular attendance

  • Completes all required training

OTHER FUNCTIONS

  • Participates in staff and IEP meetings, as appropriate and under the direction of a licensed teacher

  • Post-crisis communication as directed by licensed teacher and/or administrator

  • Engages in professional development related to functions and responsibilities

  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.

  • Frequent standing and walking

  • Moderate sitting, squatting, crouching, kneeling, bending

  • Work performed within a school setting (indoor and outdoor)

  • Moderate exposure to irritated or agitated individuals

  • Occasional exposure to bodily fluids and emergency situations

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Non-exempt - Full Time

  • Monday-Friday; 7:30am - 3:30pm

  • 10-month Johnston Educational Support Professional (JESPA)
