       Marion IndependentSchool District Job Title: Classroom Teacher (5th Grade Mathematics & Science) Reports to: Building Principal Date Revised: July 2016 Basic Function: Prepares lesson plans aligned to Iowa Core and district-identified priority standards. Instructs students and evaluates progress through common formative and summative assessments. Provides a positive learning climate where students may seek fulfillment of their potential for growth. Promote the overall mission of the school system, and work to maximize the educational opportunities available to each student. Essential Functions:

  • Teach courses in mathematics to students using the course of study adopted by the Board of Education and appropriate curriculum publications as guidelines in teaching individual course content.

  • Gather data, evaluates, and participates in a Professional Learning Community that works together to ensure students' success.

  • Develop lesson plans and appropriate instructional aids stressing discovery and laboratory learning methods.

  • Demonstrate mathematical concepts using models, chalkboard, overhead projector, calculators, computers, and other standard or teacher-prepared instructional aids.

  • Provide opportunities when needed for individualized and small-group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.

  • Design learning activities that will relate mathematics to the physical world and implement and use researched-based instructional strategies that motivate students and provide relevancy.

  • Use assessments to determine student mastery of academic standards and plan for interventions as needed.

  • Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment.

  • Evaluate each student's progress in mathematical knowledge and skills; making necessary adjustments to meet learning needs.

  • Maintain all required paperwork and submit assignments and reports on-time as directed by District administrators and supervisors.

  • Select and requisition books, instructional aids, and instructional supplies; maintain required inventory records.

  • Communicate with students and parents, informing them of evaluation methods and practices, student progress and instructional methods that may further assist students.

  • Identify pupil needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.

  • Supervise students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned workday.

  • Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs.

  • Direct and monitor the activities of special education associates and classroom volunteers.

  • Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district, and in self-selected professional growth activities.

    Specifications/Qualifications:Education & Experience:

  • Bachelors Degree required

  • Valid Iowa Teaching License

  • License Endorsement:K-6 Classroom (K-8 Math preferred), 5-12 Mathematics

  • Mandatory Reporter: Child and Adult Dependent Abuse certification

  • OSHA required certificate

  • Background Check

The position requires the commitment of professional working hours that may require the employee to extend beyond a typical eight hour workday. The employee will frequently work in different areas of the classroom including in/at desks, on or near the floor, standing, in movement while supervising indoor and outdoor activities, etc. The employee will usually work in indoor temperatures but will work outdoors when supervising students outside of the classroom.
