Position Title: 6-8 Prevention Specialist

Immediate Supervisor: Middle School Principals

Summary: To provide direct services to students in grades 6-8 regarding at-risk issues.

  1. Serve as the districts primary prevention specialist at the middle school level.
  2. Meet with individuals and groups of students regarding prevention and intervention and provide short-term counseling to students who are having difficulties adjusting to other students or school as well as students who are experiencing behavioral problems.
  3. Lead, coordinate and facilitate effective and comprehensive middle school programs and support groups including but not limited to, Olweus, Teens Reaching Youth (TRY) and Students Opposed to Drugs and Alcohol (S.O.D.A.) activities.
  4. Coordinate and facilitate events for prevention presentations and programs for the district including but not limited to Olweus, Drug and Alcohol Awareness and Red Ribbon Week activities and programming.
  5. Work directly with the middle school administration to develop annual at-risk school improvement goals and activities.
  6. Assist with cases of child abuse, truancy, pregnancy and crisis situation and refer students, parents or families to community agencies where the need is indicated.
  7. Maintain follow-up of students being seen by another community agency as requested.
  8. Act as a liaison with parents and community resources.
  9. Collect data, analyze trends and intervene when and where necessary.
  10. Serve on Middle School Student Assistance Team.
  11. Serve on the Traumatic Events Response Team for the middle schools.
  12. Accept referrals from school staff, students and parents.
  13. Educate school and local communities on the function and importance of prevention.
  14. Collaborate with and support teachers in their efforts to understand and utilize the uniqueness of each childs social and cultural heritage and environment.
  15. Provide classroom instruction that addresses positive youth development.
  16. Assist with designing/facilitating staff development.
  17. Help in the transition of students from fifth to sixth grade and eighth to ninth grade.
  18. Attend and participate in district and community meetings as requested.
  19. Regular and reliable attendance.
  20. Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities: None

Minimum Education or Experience:

  • B.A. degree in education, psychology, sociology, social work or other related field required.
  • Experience in family counseling or programming with parents and families.
  • Experience and knowledge in working with Student Assistance programs.
  • Experience in working with At-Risk Adolescents and accessing appropriate community resources.
  • Experience with individual and group counseling.

Licensure or Certification: Counseling, Prevention or Criminal Justice Certification from the Iowa Board Certification, Social Work license, and/or other applicable license/certification or eligible to obtain license/certification within one year of hire.

  1. Ability to provide interventions and assessment of personal and life issues for students making use of community resources when appropriate.
  2. Knowledge and ability to teach classroom lessons that address school climate issues, conflict resolution lessons and problem solving.
  3. Understanding of current curriculum on alcohol, drug and tobacco prevention programs.
  4. Facilitation skills for individual and small group problem-solving sessions.
  5. Knowledge of governmental, state and local agencies to help provide services as needed.
  6. Ability to coordinate Olweus, Teens Reaching Youth (TRY) and Students Opposed to Drugs and Alcohol (S.O.D.A.) activities and programs.
  7. Ability to communicate, both verbally and written, to groups or individuals.
