MERCY MEDICAL CENTER
Under direct supervision, the Student Nurse Intern assists in the delivery of holistic, compassionate, individualized, effective quality patient care and customer satisfaction. The Student Nurse Intern will be allowed to participate in the routine care of patients which includes assessment, nursing interventions, treatments, medication administration, nutritional screening, observations, nursing activities, documentation, and patient teaching. This is accomplished by supporting the patient in activities of daily living, as well as other physical, emotional and spiritual needs consistent with the mission of Mercy, Patient care services vision, evidence-based standards of care and established policies and procedures. Work will include components of direct patient care, nutrition, observation, documentation, transportation and general maintenance of the patient environment. Adheres to the principles of Service Excellence Guiding Behaviors and the philosophy and mission of Mercy in all aspects of job performance.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONAL COMPETENCIES:
Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide service/care appropriate to the age of the patients served, in accordance with Mercy standards.
Participate in collaborative practice with an experienced nurse preceptor or mentor and assume shared responsibility for patient assignments. This includes assessment, nursing interventions, treatments, medication administration, nursing activities, documentation, and patient teaching.
Student Nurse Interns may participate in other patient care activities under the direct supervision of the primary nurse as deemed appropriate.

Active student in good standing in BSN program between junior and senior year. Completed at least one acute care clinical rotation. Must be actively enrolled in an independent study course with their accredited college; accredited college must have a clinical affiliation agreement with the respective clinical site. Anticipate graduation within one year after completion of the summer internship program. Have an above average academic record. Must have a general working knowledge of computers and department specific software (i.e. Health stream, internet, etc.). Must be comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment. Must possess a personal presence that is characterized by a sense of honesty, integrity, and caring with the ability to inspire and motivate others to promote the philosophy, mission, vision, goals, and values of Mercy and Trinity Health.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Must successfully pass employment physical examination and must adhere to applicable organizational requirements on an annual basis for Employee Health Directives. Must possess the ability to comply with Mercy and Trinity Health policies and procedures. This job is categorized as "Medium Work". Has the physical stamina to meet the requirements of this job. Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and /or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly. Must be able to handle stress effectively. Must understand and accept the possibility of exposure to environmental elements, internal and external, which may affect the work place, such as infectious disease, chemical and/or chemical fumes, dust, noise, physical injury from an out of control patient, and adverse effects of inclement weather which may occur.
