POSITION SUMMARY: The Perioperative Registered Nurse is responsible for the delivery of direct care of the perioperative patient through the use of the nursing process while adhering to the standards of Nursing Care and policies and procedures of the hospital. The professional nurse coordinates care with other disciplines and collaborates with the patient, family, significant others and physician on behalf of the patient.


  • Scrubs and circulates on cases independently, with minimal direction.

  • Prepares for surgical cases in an efficient manner, anticipating needs of patient, surgeon, anesthesia and other O.R. team members.

  • Provides a safe environment for patient and staff by implementing standards of aseptic technique and by controlling the physical and psychological aspects of that environment.

  • Collects and analyzes data and assesses patient in developing nursing diagnosis.

  • Communicates effectively with the patient, staff, physicians and families.

  • Maintains knowledge of equipment set-up and function.

  • Initiates and directs room clean up and turnover.

  • Adheres to standards of care for respective nursing units and utilizes the nursing process.

  • Demonstrates nursing knowledge and judgment concerning patient care delivery.

  • Demonstrates ability to establish priorities and organize effectively.

  • Demonstrates competence in the clinical practice area.

  • Assumes responsibility for own professional growth and continuing education.

  • Demonstrates professional written and verbal skills.

  • Demonstrate professional attitude and interest in work by maintaining acceptable work habits and behaviors.

  • Demonstrates knowledge and participates in the education of patient, relatives and visitors.

  • Demonstrates commitment to Customer Service.


QUALIFICATIONS: Must be knowledgeable regarding the nursing process and application, specifically in the intraoperative phase in both the scrub and circulating roles according to established guidelines. Must be able to read, write and follow written and oral instructions in English. Skilled in the care of the perioperative care of the infant, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient groups. Possesses knowledge and understanding of the processes that occur with each age group. Obtains nursing continuing education units appropriate to clinical assignment. Maintains BLS certification at health care provider level, obtained within six (6) weeks of hire. Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training specific to population served within three (3) months of hire. ACLS and PALS certified, or working towards certification within six (6) months of hire.

EDUCATION: Must be a graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.

EXPERIENCE: Two years of experience in perioperative department preferred.

LICENSURE: Possession of a current or compact state license as a Registered Nurse issued/defined by the State of Iowa.
