The Valent BioSciences manufacturing site located on an expansive 73-acre site in Osage, IA is a state of the art 130,000 square foot plant and is the largest purpose-built biorational facility in the world. It serves as the manufacturing and quality control center for Valent BioSciences broad portfolio of fermentation products.
Description of Job:
As the Entomology Rearing Specialist at Valent BioSciences, you will assist in managing all aspects of the insectary and colony maintenance providing high quality insects for product testing. You will be responsible for scheduling the insects for testing purposes. You will adhere to critical timepoints in order to produce consistent outcomes in conjunction with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP). Good documentation practices and well as the ability to follow and comprehend a written procedure is a requirement.
Key Responsibilities:
Maintain the insectary colonies and provide high quality insects for product testing.
Preparation of insect diets.
Maintain adequate supply inventories within the insectary through contact with vendors.
Daily, weekly and monthly laboratory cleaning as required.
Cleaning, calibration, maintenance and troubleshooting of lab equipment and instrumentation.
Participate in continuous improvement activities in the laboratory.
Follow standard test methods and other work instructions and document quality activities as required.
Conduct and / or assist with laboratory investigations and deviations.
Maintain work instructions, forms and logs for the insectary.
Participates in skills training as needed.
Must have flexibility to work some off-shift and weekend hours, including overtime hours as needed to meet business demands.
Performs other tasks as specified by the manager/director.
Preferred Qualifications and Education:
HS diploma or equivalent is required. BA/BS degree or equivalent is beneficial.
Experience with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP).
Experience with Good Aseptic Technique.
Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) experience or knowledge is beneficial.
Experience with insect rearing and maintenance of insect colonies is desired but not required.
Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel along with other spreadsheet/database software.
Good inter-departmental communication (written / verbal) required.
Ability to comprehend, understand and write scientific procedures.
Maintains compliance with all department and company policies and procedures.
