Indian Hills Community College Director, Campus Safety & Security in Ottumwa, Iowa

Job Summary:

The Director, Campus Safety & Security will be directly responsible for the management and enforcement of all campus security, emergency management, required federal reporting, and serve as lead Title IX investigator. The Director, Campus Safety & Security will supervise security staff and ensure all officers are up to date with required trainings. The position will ensure appropriate safety and security measures are in place to provide a safe environment for college students, faculty, staff, on-campus residents, and visitors.

Job Requirements:

  • Experience working in campus safety and security at a higher education institution is preferred.

  • Post-secondary work in Criminal Justice or related field is preferred.

  • Previous experience in security, law enforcement, or campus safety required.

  • Ability to work independently on a day-to-day basis with a minimum of supervision.

  • Ability to positively interact with staff, students, visitors, and residents of the college and adapt to changing situations efficiently and effectively.

  • This position requires a criminal background check and a drug screen.

  • Required valid Iowa Driver’s License.

  • Employee will be required to pass the minimum standards for firearm certification and taser certification and possess a professional firearms permit.

  • Continued certification, training, and proficiency in accordance with the IHCC Weapons Policy is required.

  • Become certified in First Aid, CPR, and AED.

    Work Performed:

  • Develop and understand all required reporting responsibilities under the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act.

  • Routinely evaluate campus security issues and make recommendations on security issues campus-wide to the administrative council.

  • Schedule, supervise and evaluate security staff.

  • Maintain the colleges Emergency Management Plan through necessary trainings and document updates while working with local law enforcement, emergency personnel, first responders, and the Campus Emergency Response Team.

  • Continuously monitor and make recommendations for improving campus safety.

  • Serve on the colleges Title IX team as a lead investigator.

  • Collaborate with appropriate IHCC staff in completing annual Clery Act Reporting and College Annual Security and Fire Safety Report.

  • Proficiency in use of Microsoft Office Suite, Colleague, Maxient and other systems utilized at IHCC.

  • Maintain daily Campus Crime and Fire Log.

  • Coordinate with the Director of Student Life to schedule and run fire and tornado drills for the college’s seven residence halls and ensure these are included in the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report.

  • Understanding and compliance with the Indian Hills Community College Weapons Policy.

  • Attend trainings to ensure the college is in compliance with Emergency Management, Title IX, and other required reporting measures.

  • Assist in maintaining the college’s security vehicle.

  • Work alongside Counseling and Prevention Resource Center (CPRC) to make appropriate referrals and follow up with Indian Hill students.

  • Ensure security staff is appropriately trained in professional carry permit requirements, First Aid, CPR, and AED training, taser certification, IHCC weapons policy, levels of force training, and defensive tactics.

  • Communicate on a regular basis with campus Deans regarding security issues.

  • Respond to and provide needed assistance to students, staff, and visitors.

  • Oversight of campus parking policies and procedures.

  • Participate in state wide community college work a like group(s).

  • Understand and follow standard operating procedures.

  • Follow universal precautions and infection control techniques when required.

  • Report and file incident reports on any activities that are not a regular part of school business.

  • Police and monitor all grounds of the Ottumwa Campus and Airport Campus.

  • May fill in on occasional off hours or for special events.

  • Issue parking tickets and tow vehicles as needed for violations of campus parking regulations.

  • Manage traffic flow on campus.

  • When on duty, act as the person available for first response emergency assistance on the campus.

  • Provide staff, students, and the IHCC constituents with current, timely information regarding threats, events, and procedures.

  • Enforce speeding and other traffic regulations on the Ottumwa campus.

  • Assist Executive Dean of Student Development with the maintenance of a campus-wide crisis plan that includes the Indian Hills’ community and local law enforcement, emergency personnel, and first responders.

  • Make recommendations for improving campus safety by implementing outcomes from the campus security assessment.

  • Enforce on duty security officers to wear a uniform that designates an Indian Hills Officer on duty.

  • Other duties as may be assigned.
