UnityPoint Health Clinical Staff Educator-ICU in Sioux City, Iowa

Acts in the role of educator for new staff and also in implementing new ideas and best practices in the nursing areas. Demonstrates excellent teaching and collaboration skills with all disciplines in providing expert nursing skills to patients and their families. Has the ability to integrate evidence- based best practices to implement them in the nursing areas. Works across the continuum of care to maintain standards of care and quality improvement within area of clinical expertise.

Clinical Excellence/Leadership/Patient Care

  • Demonstrates competence in the skills, (processes, procedures, and equipment) necessary to carry out assigned duties as identified below. Demonstrated competence in recognizing and responding to patients physical, mental, emotional, and developmental needs should be evaluated in relation to the patient populations served as appropriate for each responsibility.

Direct Patient Care

  • Maintains a safe and clean environment.

  • Performs prescribed Unit Safety Checks.

  • Interprets physician's orders.

  • Assists with patient procedures, admissions, discharges and transfers.

  • Provides patient/family education.

  • Promotes an environment of medication safety.

  • Responds to Rapid Response Codes, Code Blues’, on and of unit.

  • Monitors patient sensitive indicators (real time) and collaborates with manager/director for unit improvements.

  • Reports/monitors unit events per policy.

Technical

  • Identifies/recognizes signs of allergic reaction.

  • Is knowledgeable of cardiac and pressure monitoring.

  • Assures availability of equipment and supplies.

  • Reports equipment problems or malfunctions.

  • Assesses the needs of patients and families, providing appropriate teaching and making the necessary referrals to provide continuity of care.

Education:

Graduate of accredited nursing program

Experience:

3 years of clinical specialty and proven teaching expertise with hospital experience or a proven history of positive leadership skills in an active hospital leadership or Lead Nurse role.

Positive history of collaboration, team work, best practice, and role model of FOCUS values.

License(s)/Certification(s):

Current licensure in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in Iowa.

Must possess and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or obtain certification within 30 days from date of hire. Advanced Coronary Life Support (ACLS) certification or obtain within six (6) months from hire. Unit specific additional functions will be addressed in the competency checklist specific to the assigned unit. Additional certifications and requirements are unit based. CPI after 90 days from date of hire and maintain. Must obtain NIHSS within 90 days of hire and maintain every two years thereafter. Completion of eight hours of stroke education prior to the end of orientation and annually. Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.
