Qualifications:High school diplomaInterpreter licenseJob Purpose: iFacilitate communication for staff and students who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing through the use of sign language. Coordinate subbing responsibilities, provide professional development and supervise the sign language interpreters.Essential Duties and Responsibilities:Provide interpreting services to students using appropriate signing systems.iiiiiiii Serve as a multidisciplinary team member at IEP meetings.iiiiiiii Provide related assistance to the teacher when appropriate.iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii Provide for in-service training to new teachers regarding interpreter roles and responsibilities.iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii Facilitate communication (sign to voice and voice to sign) for deaf and hard of hearing students in all classroom activities, appropriately conveying expressions, gestures, inflections, and assuring proper positioning in the classroom.iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii Follow Local Educational Agency (LEA) building procedures, classroom schedules, and sign language system designated by district.iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii Use time efficiently to review text, lesson plans, etc.iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii Develop student independence by directing all their questions to the teacher unless otherwise instructed by the classroom teacher.iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii iiiiiiiiiii Conduct sign language classes for hearing students as assigned.iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii Assume tutorial duties when under direction of the classroom teacher and when studentis interpreting needs are not compromised.iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii iiiiiiiiiii Adjust for distractions such as make-up, jewelry, clothing, and lighting.iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii Adhere to the Iowa Department of Education rules, IDEA Part B and C statute regulations, and Northwest AEA policies and procedures.Provide subbing support for interpreters when neededAssign subs and/or contact outside agencies to provide subbing support as neededRecommend and support the Director to hire new interpreters when requested by districts servedInterpret for teacher of the deaf when requestedComplete yearly evaluations for all sign language interpretersWork closely with the hearing department AEA administratoriCoordinate professional development opportunitiesProvide mentoring support in conjunction with the Iowa School for the Deafiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii Other duties as assigned.Physical Demands:Hearing acuity to accurately sign instruction for students.iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii Continuous use of arms, hands and body language for ASL signing for hearing impaired students.
