Job Description: Bus Monitor

REPORTS TO: Primary: Transportation Director

Secondary: Bus Driver

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt - Hourly

STATUS: Part Time 4-5 Hours per week. $13.50 per hour.

BASIC FUNCTIONS:

Assist the bus driver in ensuring safe and orderly transportation to and from school for the students on the assigned bus route by taking physical safety precautions as well as managing student behavior.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent required.

  • Two-year Associate Degree, or 60 College Semester Credits, or Passing Score on Iowa Paraprofessional Assessment, or Demonstrate Iowa Paraprofessional Core Competencies preferred.

  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Ability to operate required equipment in a safe and productive manner.

  • Successful experience working with school-aged children preferred.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • The VSCSD Board of Directors establishes hourly wage & work year.

EVALUATION: The Transportation Director evaluates the performance of this job.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Adhere to applicable state and federal laws, rules and regulations, board policies and administrative rules.

  • Demonstrate organization and professionalism in fulfilling the responsibilities of the position.

  • Maintain a “service orientation” and treat all students, parents, staff, and visitors with professional courtesy.

  • Demonstrate a positive attitude toward school, students and job while communicating the same to the community.

  • Attend seminars and training as needed to stay current with state and federal regulations and requirements.

  • Dress appropriately for the position and work required.

  • Accept constructive criticism and suggestions while seeking to improve each performance responsibility.

  • Maintain professionalism related to confidentiality of student records and the school operation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Supervise students while riding, boarding, and exiting the bus.

  • Assist students with on boarding and off boarding the bus safely.

  • Monitor and redirect students to ensure physical safety and to minimize distractions to the bus driver.

  • Create, enforce, and update seating arrangements that maintain safety, discipline, and efficiency in transporting students. Restraint requirements as well as loading and unloading schedule should be considered in the creation of seating arrangements.

  • Observe and record information regarding student behavior.

  • Maintain discipline on the bus, including completion of ODRs when necessary.

  • Ensure students are correctly secured in seat belts/restraints when available and remain secure for the duration of the ride.

  • Ensure students remain seated and follow bus expectations for the duration of the ride.

  • Assist students to gain independence in problem solving, making choices, and task completion by allowing students to function independently as often as possible.

  • Assist teachers or other staff members to safely lift and transfer students .

  • Follow teacher instructions regarding the use, storage, and securing of walkers, wheelchairs, and other mobility devices.

  • Report concerns, comments, questions and observations to immediate supervisor.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Able to communicate effectively via a telephone and email in a clear, precise manner.

  • Able to write and record reports utilizing basic computer functions.

  • Able to climb stairs or stand and walk for extended periods of time.

  • Able to sit, reach, carry, push, bend body at waist, bend both knees, twist, and stoop while handling items.

  • Able to read and interpret policies, procedures and employee handbook.

  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds using proper lifting techniques.

  • Ability to utilize specialized equipment for lifting, standing or transporting students with special needs.

  • Able to hear and speak in order to communicate with students, parents, co-workers, and supervisors.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Will be require to work in confined space such as a vehicle/school bus.

  • Will be required to be away from fixed work location for the majority of working hours.

  • Will be required to to work outdoors for brief periods of time during loading and unloading of bus.

  • May be required to work additional hours as required for special events or during certain times of the year.
