GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:

Kirkwood Community College seeks a skilled and enthusiastic individual to join our team as an Automotive Technology Instructor. The successful candidate will have a strong knowledge base evidenced by industry certifications (ASE) and professional work experience in the automotive industry. Successful candidate should have strong mechanical skills related to general automotive servicing to specific automotive systems and will be responsible for fostering student learning in a NATEF certified program of study. Teaching experience at the secondary and/or post-secondary level is desirable. Primary duties will include instructing students, meeting regularly with industry stakeholders and communicating with department staff, students, and other faculty.

Teaching occurs mornings, afternoons and/or evenings and is comprised of face-to-face lecture, online learning, and hands-on laboratory activities. Teaching assignments will include coursework at the Washington County Regional Center Automotive Academy program in Washington, and may include on campus instruction as well. Related work includes communication with industry partners, serving on college committees, developing curriculum, evaluating and reporting student performance in compliance with college policies and procedures, assisting in the development and implementation of college initiatives. The instructor will be responsible for meeting the goals and objectives of an individual Professional Preparation Plan as outlined in the College’s Quality Faculty Plan.

The work schedule for this position will typically be Monday through Friday from 7 am to 4 pm with some variability.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Be able and willing to deliver courses in variable delivery times, methods, and locations as required by the college.

  • Effectively organize, prepare, and teach assigned courses in accordance with established syllabi to students with varying backgrounds and abilities and adjust teaching techniques accordingly.

  • Evaluate student performance and provide timely feedback on a regular basis.

  • Utilize the Kirkwood Learning Management System to post course syllabi and relevant documents and provide access to student grade book.

  • Maintain minimum office hours and be available on an as-needed basis for student questions and discussions regarding their performance.

  • Participate in curriculum development, revision, and assessment activities at course, program, department, and college levels.

  • Discuss program, career, transfer options and other college services with students to support informed academic decisions.

  • Cultivate student engagement through facilitation of and/or participation in college-sponsored activities.

  • Participate in the development and/or execution of departmental and college tasks, projects, and goals.

  • Maintain relationships with K-12, transfer, and community and/or industry partners.

  • Regularly engage in professional development activities and actively seek information about developing trends and ideas.

  • Perform other related work duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES WITH/WITHOUT REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION:

Position involves occasional (10-33%) sitting and constant (67-100%) standing in a classroom/laboratory setting. Constant (67-100%) reaching, walking, lifting, dexterity, grasping, talking, hearing, repetitive motions, and viewing various types of visual work, and perceiving attributes of objects such as size, shape, temperature or texture. Frequent (34-66%) stooping, kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling, carrying, and visualizing three-dimensions from a two-dimensional medium. Exerting up to 50-100 pounds occasionally. May travel to other on-campus facilities, off-campus facilities and agencies to teach, attend meetings, etc.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • ASE Certified in assigned courses.

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in a related field or a combination of 6000 hours of relevant, tested experience, education, and training in an automotive role.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Valid Driver’s license.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of 5 years of full-time experience in the automotive field.

  • Community college teaching experience.

  • ASE Master Certified.
