Position Criteria:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree, preferred
  • Iowa Sign Language Interpreter License
  • Knowledge of correct English usage, conceptually accurate signed English (American Sign Language)
  • Experience working with deaf community, especially children

Performance Criteria:

  • Accurately perform American Sign Language (ASL) presented in a classroom or building situation (examples-lectures, announcements, discussion, assemblies)
  • Interprets for student(s) during regular scheduled school hours as dictated by
  • individual students IEP and as assigned by the building principal or designee using the districts communication policy as a guide
  • Providing access to the students school day, which may include testing time, clubs, or independent work
  • Interpreting for school-sponsored functions outside of the classroom during regularly scheduled school hours
  • Conveys the content and spirit of the speaker using the language most readily
  • understood by the receiver.
  • Attends IEP and other meetings (when appropriate)
  • Keeps the teacher and administrator informed of all relevant student-related matters.
  • Maintains working knowledge and use of available technology.
  • Works well with others as well as independently, maintaining positive and effective
  • communication with school personnel and students.
  • Assists in the supervision of all students in the classroom and other areas of the
  • school facility when not scheduled to interpret, when needs of assigned student
  • have been met, or when assigned student is absent from school.
  • Assists staff in preparation of materials when not scheduled to interpret or when
  • needs of assigned students have been met.
  • Provides designated student(s) instructional services including physical and academic
  • assistance, behavior interventions, and instruction of social skills, according to IEP
  • and under the direction of a special education teacher.
  • Works with all groups or individual students in the daily routine of the classroom
  • under the teachers direction when not scheduled to interpret, when needs of
  • assigned students have been met, or when assigned student is absent from school.
  • Opportunities to interpret during school sponsored after school and extracurricular activities as determined by IEP team and student needs (optional, not required).
  • Other duties as assigned
