Manages and oversees the risk management program for The Iowa Clinic. Develops and implements appropriate measures to identify/minimize the risk of injury to patients, visitors and staff, and to minimize loss/damage to property. Coordinates and responds to patient / visitor complaints or concerns and takes appropriate corrective action. Coordinates and responds to incidents and sentinel events. Supervises/directs the activities of various levels of assigned personnel using both professional and supervisory discretion and independent judgment.

Education: Bachelor’s degree required. Advanced degree preferred.

Licensure Certification: Active nursing license in the State of Iowa is preferred.

Previous Work Experience: Previous responsible experience working with healthcare risk, incident investigation, employee / occupational health and/or enterprise wide programs. Previous clinical experience preferred. Previous experience with physician practice groups preferred.

Essential Functions

  • Receives and/or reviews patient complaints. Investigates and/or coordinates the investigation into complaints; collaboratively works with department and clinical personnel for resolution; and communicate with patients regarding the same.

  • Reviews and analyzes incident reports, triages and coordinates follow-up from same. Investigates all serious events. Assists with communication and documentation of errors or serious events. Supports process of root cause analysis in the event of a sentinel event. Coordinates review of medical information, debriefs personnel, performs cause and effect analysis and coordinates expert panel review, root solution and follow-up for all incidents identified.

  • Coordinates risk surveys and inspections, monitors reporting with risk management program, and coordinates corrective actions or recommended improvements with management and staff, in order to identify risk needs, risk issues or exposures to loss.

  • Maintains the risk management information system. Collects, evaluates, and reports on events, incidents, and claims. Identifies and communicates trends in patient complaints and risk management issues to management physician leadership.

  • Oversees the monitoring of the performance of risk mitigation and prevention activities and related activities. Takes or recommends appropriate steps to maintain or improve effectiveness of same.

  • Works with Risk Management personnel to coordinate the investigation, processing, settlement, and defense of claims and suits against the organization. Notifies insurance carriers of potential and actual claims. Coordinates the release of information in response to subpoenas, court orders, attorney requests, etc.

  • Coordinates the employee safety program, including OSHA compliance (i.e. hazardous material review, safety compliance, recordkeeping, etc.). Provide direction on occupational health issues.

  • Provides risk management information on providers for use in the internal credentialing process. Provides risk assessment of provider applicants for recruitment.

  • Chairs or coordinates with committee(s) and work group(s) directed towards promoting patient safety, as member, or ex officio, as needed to communicate findings, recommendations, actions, and results.

  • Enhances own knowledge of risk management through professional associations, journals, workshops, in services, etc. Maintains awareness of applicable laws and/or regulations and remains current on changes. Recognizes implications of applicable laws and/or regulations and implements or recommends courses of action. Understands and implements programs related to national and local patient safety initiatives

  • Coordinates risk and safety management orientation and continuing education programs for providers, management, and staff to enhance awareness of their role in patient safety, risk reduction, and event reporting.

  • Promotes a positive, professional image of the organization both internally and externally. Develops and maintains positive working relationships to promote open communication and accurate flow of information.
